Recovery is personal.

Temporary discomfort or blood in urine can occur. Recovery and return to activity depend on your treatment.

Risks to discuss. Discuss infection, ureter injury, stent symptoms and the possibility of another procedure.

  1. A flexible route to the kidney.

    Under anaesthesia, a flexible telescope passes through the urethra, bladder and ureter into the kidney.

  2. Treat the stone with a laser.

    A laser fibre breaks the stone into dust or small pieces within the kidney’s collecting system.

  3. Remove selected fragments.

    Pieces can be retrieved with a basket. Fine fragments may pass later, and some stones need staged treatment.

  4. Plan the follow-up.

    A temporary stent may be left between kidney and bladder. Follow-up checks recovery and any remaining stone.
